27/09/2011 · Using a throwaway, but I am currently a rising 2nd year in a V10 firm. My hours are pretty shite for a mix of reasons - burnout, hate the work, bad firm culture, personal stuff. I am expecting to get let go as there were a few signs and was told my hours are low. I have an exit starting summer 2021, but may not make it long enough in biglaw.

Biglaw attorneys work their butts off and their salaries confirm it. ID attorneys, on the other hand, work their butts off and in the end, have nothing to show for it. Because of the extraordinary salary of a Biglaw attorney, a typical non-lawyer arguably may not earn as much as a Biglaw person of the same age and similar career status.
I am a third year associate at a big firm. To me, working in biglaw is a no brainer. The money is great, the work is interesting, and exit opportunities are good. Our firm gives unlimited billable credit for pro bono work, so I have had some great opportunities outside of my commercial practice.

BigLaw midlevel/senior associate here. I am a litigator. I came into BigLaw with very low expectations and no interest in staying long-term. My plan was to pay down as much debt as I could in 2.5 years, and then get out. And, honestly, the job lived up to expectations for my first 1.5 years or so. Being a first-year associate is no fun.

I recommend people do what I did. Take Advance Civil Procedure, Tort Litigation, Advanced Tort Litigation, Insurance Law, and clinic, and go make enough cash to open your own firm and take 10-12 weeks off for a year. These BigLaw people can go right ahead and worked their 20's away so they can make partner in 7 years.

With that said, the tax biglaw market is much smaller than other groups, such as corporate. As for mailing to random biglaw, Ill be honest, I never tried. I only applied to firms that were looking. From what I have heard, it does not work too well. However, it is still worth a shot if you have spare time and they are not interviewing anywhere.
